Main Costs
State Fees:
  • The standard licensing fee for a 1st time applicant is $140, half price to seniors, $25 to veterans & free to active military (within 1- year of discharge).
  • The standard licensing fee for renewals is $70, half price to seniors, $25 to veterans & free to active military (within 1- year of discharge). No classroom time or proficiency test is required.
  • Class Fees:
  • The class fee is $100.
  • Photo Requirements
  • For security purposes and processing efficiency, DPS is now utilizing the Texas Driver License or ID card photo on file for CHLs. The CHL-6 (Photo Holder) is only required to be submitted by applicants who hold an out-of-state Driver License or ID Card.
  • Fingerprint Fees:
  • Fingerprinting services can be obtained from Any Lab Test Now at 3351 Turner Plaza Dr #108N, Abilene, TX 79606 (Map)

  • Course Requirements
    Classroom Qualifications:
  • The state requirement (Texas) for classroom time has been mandated at four (4) to six (6) hours for new applicants. At the end of the classroom time a written, standardized test will be administered.
  • Firing Range Qualifications:
  • The shooting proficiency test consists of fifty (50) rounds at three (3) distances: Twenty (20) shots @ 9-feet, twenty (20) shots @ 21-feet, and ten (10) shots at 45-feet.
  • The shooting proficiency test is timed and will be graded for accuracy and scoring.
  • Standard safety requirements will be practiced by all students.
